March 14, 2013, public hearings of the annual report of the Kyrgyzstan Ombudsman Tursunbek Akun was held. This year among the participants was Professor Jenishbek Nazaraliev. Famous psychiatrist and social activist, made a presentation on the new international project of the World League "Mind Free of Drugs" - "Let’s protect drug addicts of the world." The project implies an awareness campaign against stereotypes of drug addicts. Its purpose will be to fight against discrimination and social exclusion toward current and former drug users.
Within the project it is planning to cooperate with human rights defenders of other countries. Kyrgyz Ombudsman did not stay on the sidelines and first expressed a desire to participate in the project.
"Before we haven’t worked in this directions, we have to admit this mistake – said Tursunbek Akun to journalists. - For us it is a new object, a fertile territory. No one except the World League does such work, but the government, unfortunately, does not assess these initiatives and give them the necessary support. We plan to unite our efforts with the World League in this direction, and Professor Nazaraliev had a significant impact on us of his activities. Drug addiction breaks down a lot of lives of our citizens. Ombudsman under these circumstances should not be left aside. At the moment we are developing a memorandum of cooperation, but we still need to carefully examine the project to develop methods of coworking within Kyrgyzstan and find common grounds. "
Representatives of international organizations who were at the hearing, also positively reacted to the initiatives of the World League.
"This project is very important” - says the international coordinator of the project of the European Union and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime “Support for the reform of the penitentiary system in the Kyrgyz Republic” Kuhn Markvering. - It is necessary to intensify work in this direction, because every person is entitled to equal rights and freedom from discrimination, no matter who he is. And government agencies in the fight against segregation need the help of NGOs. I am happy that there are people who independently work on such initiatives. "
