Evgeny Brun: Laughing gas will soon replace desomorphine.

31.08.2012

New type of drug addiction, inhaling nitrous oxide N2O, is gaining popularity after the free sale of codeine containing substances was banned  in Russia June 1st, 2012.

It is worth noting that this ban was supported by Federal Drug Control Service of Russian Federation. The necessity of such measures was explained by the fact that dangerous drugs, such as  desomorphine, were being easily made out of cheap substances containing codeine.

"We have just managed to get rid of the mass distribution of codeine. But new  psychoactive substances are already replacing them. The latest of them is  laughing gas. It is an anesthetic drug which is not commonly used in medicine, but as we can see is getting more and more popular among addicts "- Evgeny Brun,  chief narcologist  of MoHSDR( Russia), said.

"Physicians are not sure yet how exactly this drug affects the brain and how people get addicted to it, but it is clear that in near future free sale of regular drugs will be prohibited as well" – he added.
