A cat supplied prisoners with drugs in Russia

07.08.2012

Officers of the Department of Russian Federal Drug Control Service in Rostovskaya oblast revealed a scheme of drug supply to the correctional facility #20. The main drug supplier of the detainees was a black cat which carried banned substances into the territory of the secure facility.

The scheme was well-oiled. It has been functioning for a long time. When a detainee was discharged, he used to carry the cat out in his bag. His accomplices met him at the gates. The ex-detainee used to leave the pet with them setting off on his business, using some excuse. The accomplices used to put heroin into the cat’s collar, then the cat used to return to the territory of the correctional facility.

The cat’s frequent visits aroused suspicion of the correctional facility officers. They maintained an operation together with Federal Drug Control Service of the Russian Federation. As a result, detainees’ accomplices were caught red-handed while they were stuffing the cat’s collar with drugs.

According to the officers, attempts to pass banned substances to detainees are not uncommon. Usually, drugs are catapulted into the territory of the secure facility by means of a tweaker. However, it was the first incident when an animal was used as a drug mule.

After the operation the drug courier never appeared at the indoor area of the secure facility.
