A former Mexican state governor made millions of dollars by drug trade

The Federal Court of New York found Mario Villanueva, the former governor of Quintana Roo state from 1993 to 1999, guilty of laundering money proceeded from cocaine trade. The suspect may be sentenced to 20 in prison.

He had already served his six-year sentence in Mexico for money laundering, but in 2010 he was extradited to the USA. One of his accomplices Consuelo Márquez was arrested and convicted in 2005.

Elected President of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto has promised to cooperate with American special services in their struggle against growing in strength drug cartels.
