7 teenage drug mules are detained in Russia

01.08.2012

At a recent news conference of the Head Department of Russian Interior Ministry in Nizhegorodskaya Oblast, Deputy Head of the department Dmitriy Postnikov announced frightening statistics: 7 underage drug mules were arrested in the region over the past six months.

“As we found out during the special investigation activities, the teenagers were brought from the CIS countries specially for the purpose to make them work in the drug business. As soon as the children arrived in Nizhegorodskaya Oblast of Russia, local criminal groups introduced them to task,” Postnikov said.

Drug dealers make use of the fact that underage drug mules can’t be charged, in spite of the fact that large drug consignments were confiscated from them. As a result, such children are normally sent to a juvenile ward for the submission of proof of identity.

“Here we face a number of problems: the teenage detainees are functionally illiterate. They barely speak Russian and understand this language poorly. That’s why it’s difficult to identify the people who involved them into this activity. However, we have achieved certain results,” Dmitriy Postnikov said.
