El Proceso daily magazine reports that the tensions between the two criminal leaders of Zetas, one of the largest drug cartels increased very much. Heriberto Lazcano, alias 'Z-3', and Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales (a.k.a. Z-40) are in direct confrontation with each other.
In recent months, a number of banners and video clips disclosing the criminal leaders as traitors and murderers of the members of their own gang. Researches of the InSight Crime, a non-profit journalism and consultancy organization specialized in organized crime in Latin America, show that the discord between the drug cartel’s two leaders most probably will result in mass murders not only of Los Zetas members, but also members of other gangs too.
Los Zetas is one of the largest criminal groups. Currently it includes about 3000 people. It was organized by elite special service officers of Guatemala and Mexico. The present annual income of the drug cartel is approximately $10 billion.
If no peaceful solution is found, a wave of social unrest will cover North-Eastern territories under the control of Los Zetas, especially such regions as Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
