Regional Mexican authorities can no longer control drug dealers

23.07.2012

It is getting more and more difficult to control rampant drug related crime. The appeal of the Mexican Chihuahua state to the federal government requesting emergency assistance is the latest evidence of the fact.

According to Cesar Duarte Jáquez, the governor of the state, local authorities don’t have any additional resources for the efficient struggle.

"Politics not supported by enforcement resources is pure demagogy," the governor said.

The situation is exacerbated by the newly issued law relieving federal authorities of the responsibility to regulate drug trafficking and drug abuse in Mexico. The state authorities should now control the situation related to drugs alone,  though the federal police and military used to help them before in this struggle.

Drug criminality in Chihuahua is so developed that police officers quit their job in fear for their own lives. Only last week 90% of the San Francisco de Conchos police officers resigned. In 2011 the the whole police department of the Ascensión city resigned after series of threats from the leaders of drug cartels.
