The siege of the "The City Without Drugs"

09.07.2012

Authorized searches in the offices of the organization exacerbated the situation to the limit - the impact of public campaign to check on compliance are so significant that right now the existence of the foundation headed by businessman and former State Duma deputy, Yevgeny Roizman, is under the question. Three criminal cases on this organization resulted not only in different talks defensing it, but also in loss of reputation.

Of course, there is no clear opinion on these cases: some appear to support Mr. Roizman, justifying his methods, while others strongly condemn them, emphasizing the lack of medical education among foundations’ staff and cruel techniques used on patients, such as harassing squats, handcuffing to the battery and flogging.

Police got seriously interested in "The City without drugs" after the death of Tatyana Kuznetsova, "patient", who died in June of this year from meningitis after undergoing treatment in the "City." Despite the fact that the dead girl's parents didn’t  have any claims, massive checks results in three criminal cases: one on the death of Kuznetsova ("causing death by negligence"), and two  for the "unlawful deprivation of liberty." In one of these cases Women's Center "Cities without drugs" was  raided with the help of SWAT unit.

Yevgeny Roizman, head of the "Cities without drugs,» believes that the increase in the interest of law enforcement bodies to him and his organization, as well as a desire to obstruct its work, is a  revenge for his criticism of the judicial system in Russia.

However, the director of the Federal Drug Control Service,Viktor Ivanov said that Mr. Roizman Fund may continue to work, provided that it  f will not violate the laws of Russia in future. "Any activity which is not prohibited may be continued. The fact that such an organization is in demand, says that people need it. But it must operate within the legal mainstream, "- said Ivanov.

Press-secretary of Interior Ministry of  Sverdlovsk Region, Valery Gorelyh emphasized on the same thing: "We do not aim to close centers and the foundation  itself. Our main goal is to investigate what has happened. If everything is legitimate, then the organization will continue working"

In this situation, the governmental authorities of the Sverdlovsk region decided to establish a rehabilitation center "Ural without drugs." Governor of the region, Eugene Kuyvashev,  noted that this has nothing to do with the case of "The City".

At a recent press conference, Yevgeny Roizman said that Moscow plans to open a branch of his organization, which will deal only with analytical work. "In the very near future we will have a branch of the Foundation in Moscow. We will keep working as usual," - said Roizman. He also said he was not going to forget about this "provocation" by the authorities and will appeal every step of the law enforcement officers in the court. If the pressure from the authorities will continue, he is ready to bring people to the rally. "A lot of people ask us to apply for a rally and bring people into the streets. Now we think, how and when we will do this" - says Roizman.
