Sarah Grimes has previously been a lecturer in criminology at the University of Surrey, and a lecturer and British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the London School of Economics. She is working on a three year EPOC-funded project on adolescent-to-parent violence and a British Academy-funded project on parenting expertise in youth justice.

  • In you opinion how important is parental education and relationships within the family in preventing drug addiction?

    Parents must talk to their kids, keeping communication open and also not using drugs themselves. It needs to start very early with children because the opportunity for drug use will begin much younger than any parent can imagine. Most kids who become addict had first use at twelve years of age.

  • What should be in the Internet age and growth of online communities informational methods to combat drug addiction? What do you think, what means will be most effective today, and how the state should behave in order to successfully affect the suffering of drug addiction and to conduct prevention among healthy population?

    Drug addiction prevention is a difficult issue because in order to prevent something one must first realize that there is a problem, or the potential for a problem. In a perfect world, the best drug addiction prevention is "not to play". But it isn’t that easy. What can I help you? Yourself ... Your Family ... Your Friends ... Your Community ...

    The best prevention measure for children is strong parenting, and drug addiction prevention initiatives in schools, churches and the community. Prevention programs need to adapt to the environment where the effort is taking place.

    In addition to programs in schools, programs can be tailor made to meet the needs in churches or community centers that deal directly with people who live in the area.
